Mishloach

This year more than ever it is important for us to celebrate our Judaism and spread Jewish joy. We hope you enjoy the Mishloach Manot and it helps to increase the Jewish joy in your life.

Why a Havdalah Candle in Mishloach Manot?
Toward the end of Megillat Esther is a magnificent verse (8:16) saying, “For the Jews there was light and joy and gladness and honor” (ַליְּהוּדִים הָיְתָה אוֹרָה וְשִׂמְחָה וְשָׂשֹׂן וִיקָר). Following a period of darkness and fear, the story shifts to light and joy. This verse has become integrated into the Havdalah ritual, with the entire group calling out these words, and adding, “so may it be for us!” Why do we use this verse from Esther to conclude Shabbat? Isn’t Shabbat already the sweetest time of the week? Yes, of course, Shabbat is wonderful, but as it comes to an end and we return to the regular tasks of the week ahead, there can be a shadow of sorrow that creeps into the heart. With this verse, we remind ourselves that light comes from within, and that we possess the spiritual strength to live with joy, no matter the external circumstances. The twisted Havdalah candle reminds us of the unpredictable course of our lives, yet the wicks come together to create a powerful light. This year, Purim leads directly into Shabbat, connecting the joy of triumph over our foes with the joy of sanctifying the seventh day. May our light continue to shine brightly, and may we experience joy, and gladness, and honor.

Happy Purim and Shabbat Shalom!
