Middle School – a time for transition and growth.
Our Middle School program supports and challenges our students, enabling them to develop a new sense of independence while we continue to provide structure, guidance and limits. We try to create a Middle School culture, offering a number of clubs and other activities geared specifically for our Middle School students. At the same time, we recognize that each year of Middle School is unique.
The sixth graders need a year of transition between the structure of the Lower School and the greater freedoms of 7th grade and beyond. For that reason, the sixth graders do not yet have a different teacher for each subject. One of the highlights of the 6th grade year occurs in the fall when the students spend a few days at camp on our Teva environmental education retreat during which they get to know one another in an informal setting while making connections between Jewish values and the environment.
During seventh grade, most students turn 13 and celebrate with each other as they become B’nai Mitzvah. We recognize the excitement and pressure of this year and work to help our students grow socially, academically and religiously.
Our eighth graders already have an eye towards High School. They are the leaders of the Middle School, and we encourage them to take on more responsibility for their academic lives. We provide them with more academic options, including the opportunity to begin studying Spanish.
Ultimately, we want our Middle School students to approach High School equipped with both the technical skills required for academic success and a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
